There are as many ways to see Kodiak as there are brown bears on the island!

Here are just a few ideas of what you might want to do while visiting the Emerald Isle.

Ultimate Kodiak (5 days)

Get oriented by visiting the Visitor Information Center downtown at the ferry terminal.   Maps, directions and suggestions for activities can all be found here.   Visit the Maritime Museum without walls at St. Paul Harbor followed visits to the Baranov Museum, Alutiiq Museum and Kodiak Wildlife Refuge Interpretive Center.  Spend the afternoon exploring Ft. Abercrombie State Historic Park.

Spend the day on a bear viewing flight to Frazer Lake in the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge or Katmai Coast.  Alternatively, take a wildlife cruise to see puffins, sea lions, sea otters, and maybe whales.

Drive out the road to Surfer and Fossil beaches in Pasagshak for some serious beach time, whale watching and picnicking atop a bunker.  In the afternoon, go to Chiniak for more whale spotting, more World War II history and great vistas and photo opportunities.  Hike around Chiniak Lake.

Charter a boat for a day of salt water fishing and land one of Kodiak’s famous King salmon or halibut.  Not seaworthy?  Hire a guide for a day of fishing the road system.  You’ll still catch salmon…maybe even a King!

Visit the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center Touch Tank and Aquarium.   Shop at the many great galleries and gift shops.   Drive up to Pillar Mountain for amazing photo ops and sunset.

Kodiak with No Car (2-days)

Stretch your legs with a walk across the bridge to Near Island and a visit to the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center Touch Tank and Aquarium.  Great views along the way and back.  Return to downtown and visit the museums, galleries and shops.

Take a short taxi ride to the entrance of Ft. Abercrombie State Historic Park for a walk in the woods.   Return to town the same way or ask for a brief scenic tour.   Alternatively, several companies offer sightseeing tours.  Get details from the downtown visitor center.

Wild Kodiak  (6 days)

Take in downtown Kodiak by walking to museums, galleries and shops. Visit the Maritime Museum “without walls” at St. Paul Harbor.   Take an afternoon hike at Ft. Abercrombie State Historic Park

Fly out to a wilderness lodge where you will go fishing, kayaking, bear viewing and whale watching while eating scrumptious food and enjoying the solitude that is the Kodiak Island Archipelago.

Take one last spin around Kodiak shops to make sure you’re taking home something for everyone…including yourself!
